Bathroom Remodel By www.thefamilyguyscarpentry.com This project was for a couple, like the rest of us who work hard, suffered from a sore back at the end of a hard day. The house had a very small bathroom with a window that use to look outside but later a garage was added to that side of the house and the window now looked into the garage. The bath was 55 long and was partially buried in the framework of both end walls. This posed a significant problem as the customer strongly desired a jet tub that had a minimum length of 60. All wiring was out of date, there was no exhaust to the outside from inside the washroom, and outlets were in odd locations and were not GFCI. There was a small light and a under sized toilet and overall the washroom was displeasing and uncomfortable. Keeping the overall layout of the bathroom the same and just tweaking some placements of the fixtures we were able to keep the bathroom familiar yet provide a modern efficient feel and look to it. The bathroom had a number of problems that were inherited from a different time and mindset. Under the sink was an electric baseboard heater that was replaced with in-floor heating on a thermostat. The outlet that was near the ceiling at the rear of the toilet and the light switch on the outside of the bathroom was removed and a GFCI outlet was installed beside a light switch on the inside of the bathroom beside the door. My Dad and I just finished the new front deck using Trex composite deck boards, pressure treated wood and aluminum railing.

How to Build a Deck

A 10 step process describing how to build a pressure treated deck. This is a 2 level deck with benches, a bbq island, and a pergola. The bbq island contains plenty of counter space, a cold water sink, a portable bbq, and a mini fridge. Pressure treated wood and cement boards were used to build the bbq island while stone effects was used for the finishing. The backside of the deck has a door of storage and access to the plumbing. This is a great place to store fire-burning wood and extra propane tanks. No rails were used in the building process, benches and stairs protect the perimeter of the deck. The stair treads were overhung by 2 inches so that rope lighting could be installed under it. This provides ample lighting for each step and warmth to the overall ambiance. The pergola was made with 4×4 posts instead of the usual 2×6’s or 2×8’s. Adding notches to the pergola beams allowed me to place my posts on an angle to give it a diamond shape look. The fibreglass columns add beauty to the architecture. The two tone stains add a unique perspective to the deck. Use semi-transparent stain instead of a solid stain. With semi-transparent the stain just fades over time; solid stains will chip like paint and has to be sanded. For new wood fresh from the mill remember to remove the mill glaze before staining.
