Choosing patio doors to enhance your property is a good choice for three main reasons.
1. Practical uses – A convenient access to, and view of, a garden from a lounge or dining room, for example.
2. Gaining light – The extra natural light your property will gain, especially older buildings with small windows, makes patio doors an ideal choice.
3. Increased property value – Buyers love patio doors with access to a garden.
Due to modern advances in window and door technology it is possible to buy patio doors that will match your overall building design. There are many features available such as Georgian and mock Tudor designs and a choice of hard-wood or PVC.
If wood is your choice of material make sure it is hard-wood and not soft-wood. Hard-wood resists the ravages of Mother Nature where as soft-wood will warp, expand and contract greatly with changes of humidity and temperature creating either drafts or sticking doors.
If you are the owner of an old period house and you are considering either installing a new patio door or replacing an existing door or window with one, you must ensure your property has no restrictions to such changes. You may, for example, have a grade II listed building in which case you will need to consult the powers that be before installing your patio doors.
Have a look round your local DIY store or builders merchant; they generally have a vast range on display that you can touch and feel. There are many specialist companies that have show rooms so that you can get an idea of what is available to suit your older property.
