Invisible Fences Help Keep Your Pet Safe

If you have a dog that has a problem staying in your yard, then you are probably worried about them wandering off or getting into traffic. You want your dog to be able to run freely in your yard but at the same time you don’t want them to be hurt in anyway.

A relative cheap alternative to fencing or putting your dog in a dog run is to have a professional company install an invisible fence. Depending on the size of your yard, installation can start at approximately $500. This is a small price to pay when it comes to the safety of your dog. Some electric fences that you install yourself are priced cheaper but without the professional training they are often not as affective. This can end up costing you more money in the long run to switch to professional installation.

The first thing you need to do is to find a professional installer in your area that is ASPC approved to be sure that the product is humane to your dog. Most places will come out to your home and give you a free demonstration and estimate for installation. You can show them what areas you want fenced in, including around swimming pools, the woods or just specific parts of the yard.

Once the fencing is installed, the company will mark the fencing with flags so that your dog can begin to associate the flags with the boundaries. They typically have a professional dog trainer on staff that can train your dog to know where they can and can’t go. Your dog will wear a collar that will emit a tone when they are too close to the boundaries. This way they will learn to stop when they hear the sound rather than experiencing a shock. You can request them to send you batteries throughout the year so that you won’t have to worry about the batteries running out.

The average time it takes dogs to respond to the fencing and understand their boundaries is approximately 3-4 weeks. It can take more or less time depending on the dog and how much fencing is installed in the yard. Once your dog learns the boundaries, you can remove the flags. If your dog ever crosses the boundaries, you can call the company and have them come out to retrain, often free of charge.

Safe for your dog and family, the invisible fence allows you to keep your dog in your yard without changing your landscape. It does not give your dog the harmful shocks that many electric fences can give. You can search on the internet for more information or for invisible fence companies in your area.

It Is Good Practice To Use Gazebo Covers Keep Out The Rain And Bugs

A beautiful gazebo in the backyard can be a great addition for outside socializing with friends and family. The basic gazebo is four posts and roof that can be put up easily when the family wants to entertain. This gazebo can also be left up in the yard so it is available for use whenever the family wants to spend some time in the yard. The basic structure can provide shelter from the sun for a backyard picnic or next to the swimming pool. Gazebo covers are available to add extra dimensions to this handy piece of equipment. Gazebo covers come in a variety of models for the consumer.

Gazebo covers come in beautiful fabrics that add color to the basic structure, and these gazebo covers also add some privacy. The gazebo covers can be fitted over the roof of the structure and attached to the supporting posts. The gazebo covers can be made so that the cloth over the four poles can be closed when the people inside want extra privacy. These can also be used when there are some bugs in the area that might disturb the activities inside. The gazebo covers can be removed easily for storage when they are not going to be used.

Gazebo Covers Are Instant Winners

Gazebo covers of mosquito netting can be instantly added to the basic structure of the gazebo. These covers allow the occupants to enjoy the scenery outside while the bugs are there too. The mosquito netting allows total visibility of the scenery and keeps those buzzing bugs away from the people trying to socialize. The mosquito netting will also keep the troublesome flies outside as well. The group that wants to eat outside to enjoy the soft breezes and beautiful scenery will be able to do just that without the annoyance of the flies that are also looking for a great meal.

Gazebo covers are available that are waterproof. These covers keep the rain out like the others keep out the bugs. Gazebo covers can be purchased that are clear plastic so the occupants can sit outside even in the rain to enjoy the fresh air and great trees. These covers install easily over the basic structure of the gazebo. A large gazebo can accommodate a picnic table or a couple of small tables so friends and family can gather inside the gazebo for socializing away from the elements.

How To Stop Your Fence Jumping Dog And Keep Him Safe At Home

November 25, 2009 by admin

Are you just plain fed up with your fence jumping dog?  Are you worried that something bad is going to happen to him when he escapes?  Here are some tips for keeping safe at home in his own yard.

Tips For Slowing Him Down

Make it harder for him to get over the fence.  First, you may need a taller fence.  He can’t argue with gravity.  If it’s too high, he can’t get over it.

Remove anything he’s using as a step.  Trash cans, barbeque grills, tables, and firewood stacks should be moved away from the fence.  If he’s using a shed, you may need to block his access to it.

Plant some bushes in front of the fence to prevent him from getting a running start.

If you can, get on the other side of the fence with a hose.  When he starts to come over the top, squirt him and say “OFF!”

You may need to allow him in the yard only when you’re there to supervise him.  It may be necessary to keep a hard-core fence jumper on a leash so he can’t get away from you.

Preventing Dog Jumping Fence Is The Best Cure

Fence jumping is a self-rewarding behavior.  Every time your pup leaps over the fence, he’s being rewarded for his actions because he’s getting what he wanted, which was to get out of the yard.  Like many dog behavior problems, once this bad dog habit is established, it’s very hard to break.

Spend time training your pup when he’s still very young.  As little as ten minutes a day will pay big dividends later on by preventing future dog behavior problems.  These dog obedience tips will be useful for any pet owner.

We’ve all seen somebody trying vainly to get a canine on the loose to come back to them, while the pet is happily ignoring them and dashing in and out of traffic.  Prevent this potentially tragic scenario by teaching your puppy to “come” while he’s still young.

The “sit-stay” command is another basic command.  If you notice your pup even thinking about going over the fence, immediately tell him to “sit” and then to “stay.”  A well-trained pet will listen to you.

“Off” is used for a variety of situations.  You can prevent your pup from jumping up on people, or jumping on the fence, or keep him off the furniture with this command.

Training your pet is very important.  When he listens to you and obeys you, he’s accepting you as the pack leader.  Many well-meaning people don’t realize that they need to be the pack leader in order to gain their canine’s respect.  Without that respect, it’s very difficult to train him.

A Good Dog Training Course Is Essential

You’ll want to find a good dog training course.  Not only will it give your training some structure, but it helps everyone in the family to use the same commands and do the same things with him.  Consistency is the key.  It’s very difficult, if not impossible, to train a pup if someone in the household is encouraging the very behavior you’re trying to end.

You’ll want to look for a good dog training course today to end the problem of a fence jumping dog.

How To Keep Your Wooden Fencing in Tip-Top Shape

November 21, 2009 by admin

Putting in a wooden fence around your lawn or garden adds a decorative accent that many will find attractive. However, your fence may soon lose its appeal if you don’t keep it up with regular care and maintenance. Some fencing materials, like vinyl or aluminum, require their own brand of upkeep. But wooden fences benefit most from routine scraping, painting, and sealing. Plan for this annual or bi-annual maintenance when budgeting the cost for new wooden fencing.

Of course, if you can do the work instead of hiring it out, you can some substantial costs. But if you cannot, you will need to factor in the labor costs of caring for your fence. In addition, you need to cover the cost of supplies, including the paint or sealant products, along with equipment needed to do the work.

Check your fence every few months for peeling, splintering, mold, or breakage. Insect nests are another potential problem, along with knotholes where birds may be nesting. If you decide to treat the nesting areas, do so humanely, for the birds at least. Otherwise, you may wish to leave these areas alone and concentrate on actual damage to the wood. Look for signs of termite infestation, and call an exterminator if you find them. Manage pest problems before they get bigger, or you could end up paying a premium for pest control.

Depending on the style of wooden fence you have, you may want to sand off rough edges or remove protruding fragments that could cause splinters, especially if you have children or pets that are likely to play on or around the fencing. For split-rail fences, a natural look works well, but you still may need to check for problem areas that need to be treated with fungicide, herbicide, or pesticide.

Painted fences should be touched up every year or two. You will probably have to scrape away flakes and chips to get a smooth finish before repainting. You also may want to seal the fence with a product that will help to protect and preserve it. There are several on the market, so check with your local home supply outlet for details on what to buy and how to apply it.

When painting your fence, buy the right kind of outdoor paint, along with primer, if needed. You might want to put up a string barrier along the fence that you have painted to keep it from being bothered until it dries. If you are painting a wooden fence for the first time, you will want to match or at least coordinate it with other colors in your outdoor decorating scheme. These may include your porch, house door, window shutters, or shed. Otherwise, a neutral color like white, brown, or red should work well for many kinds of outdoor fences.

Even though your fence may be used for mostly functional purposes, like keeping neighborhood dogs away or protecting a parking area, it doesn’t hurt to make the fence attractive and aesthetically appealing. Check out your decorating options at your local home supply store.

Petsafe Underground Wire Radio Fence Review – Will an Underground Fence Keep Your Dog In?

November 18, 2009 by admin

Does your dog constantly jump over the fence or dig under the fence? Are you spending the day patching holes and propping up various yard furniture by the fence to keep your dog from going through a hole? Have you been poring over reviews of fencing to keep him or her in? Then this review of the Petsafe Underground Wire Radio Fence is for you.

I did this for years and I’m sure you would agree with me that it’s a major bother, not to mention it’s very unsafe for your pet to be roaming about the neighborhood unattended whenever he or she pleases.

I live on 5 acres, and I had a beloved dog who constantly got out of the fence. She was not even a dog who lived outside as all of my dogs are house pets. However, they do go out sometimes, and she unerringly would head straight for a weak area in the fence and head out to the fields next to me. I didn’t worry too much because we are not near a real busy highway but eventually she got out and got hit by a car. The loss of that dog devastated me, and I became obsessed with keeping my other dogs inside the fence no matter what. I considered another big-name wireless fence product but on checking into it, it was extremely expensive, I think it was going to be more than a thousand dollars, and this was about 9 years ago so it’s probably even more expensive now.

What I ended up ordering was the Petsafe Underground Radio Fence. The one I purchased was not wireless although they do sell that type. The product I bought is the kind which has a wire and you can either bury it if it would be in the way, or you can just lay it along your fence line or even tack it to your fence.

The kit comes with a transmitter, wire, boundary flags for training, a receiver collar for the dog to wear, and a training and installation DVD. The cost is very low for this type of item, and at the time of this writing the kits range from $159 to $269, just a fraction of the cost of the invisible fence product I had considered.

You may now wonder, since it is such a reasonable price, does it work? I am here to tell you it works perfectly. I’ve had this underground fence for 9 years now and the only problems I’ve ever had with it are when occasionally we cut the wire with a lawnmower and have to splice it back together (easy), or when, living in Florida, the transmitter gets struck by lightning because I forget to unplug it during a storm. In this case, the PetSafe Radio Fence company will replace your transmitter. For the first year we had it replaced free, and then after that we paid a small fee of about $50. They are very good about this and have always sent our new transmitter out before we even sent the old one back to them so there is very little time spent without a fence. I really can’t say enough nice things about the customer service there. Very nice people.

So I would highly recommend the Petsafe Underground Wire Fence. I didn’t just go online and read about it in order to bring you this review, I’ve actually used this product for almost 10 years and I give it my heartfelt recommendation. My dogs stay inside the fence where they belong and I have peace of mind.

Some Ways to Keep Your Kitchen Remodeling Costs Down

November 17, 2009 by admin

Kitchen cabinets are definitely going to be THE biggest expense from your entire kitchen remodel so if you’re on a tight budget here’s some things you might consider re-thinking or doing to keep this expense down.

So one of the options could be going with all wood cabinet doors instead of solid wood cabinet doors. All wood refers to cabinets with side panels that have a hardwood veneer applied to a plywood core and solid wood is a solid piece hard wood.

Hardwood veneer is a thin piece of solid wood that is typically applied to plywood or particleboard with glue to give it strength. It is uniform in finish and its grain is very consistent and there are really beautiful options in this area.

This is the process that is done when you have your kitchen cabinets refaced instead of replaced so if you like the current layout of your cabinets or even if it isn’t your favorite layout but it could still work this will save a lot of your remodeling costs.

Not only is this much less expensive for you it’s also less trees being cut down and protects the forests and still gives you the look of solid wood. All wood cabinet doors also have the advantage of less warping due to humidity and temperature change. So you could be friendlier to your budget and to the environment at the same time.

You might also consider for the cabinet frames ordering plywood sides for just the cabinets that will have one or both sides exposed.

Another option might simply refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets to a more contemporary or suitable finish than replacing the kitchen cabinets altogether. That can really change the entire look of your whole kitchen and would definitely be the easiest on your budget. That’s probably the most economical option.

Another option you might consider is reducing the number of cabinets in your kitchen plans by using one cabinet where you now have two. That might not always work but sometimes it can so look at the layout and see if this is something that is possible.

Another area that you could save on kitchen remodeling costs would be in the decorative options. Molding inserts add a LOT to the remodeling costs of a kitchen remodel. Could you still achieve a good look with fewer moldings?

Another decorative option that really racks up the expense is the handles and drawer pulls. They come in many price ranges and there are thousands of companies that offer them so by doing some shopping around you could find something quite nice in a lower price range.

Another way to save on kitchen remodeling costs would be to reduce or eliminate the number of modifications or construction options. For example could you have a countertop wine rack instead of a custom built-in cabinet? Or does the cabinet depth really need to be modified or could your objectives be met in other ways?

Yet another way to reduce some of your kitchen remodeling costs would be to perhaps put off including some of the fancy cabinet accessories and cool gadgets that could be installed later on or don’t even really need to be custom built at all.

Could the roll out shelves for the base cabinets for example be installed later on? And do you really need the custom knife drawer or the custom spice rack? If you could live without these things it would definitely be a money saving option.

So you don’t need to give up everything but there are always things you could negotiate, compromise on or eliminate altogether. So if you are really needing to keep your kitchen remodeling costs down these are some options that could really help.

Keep Small Bathroom Remodel Simple

November 17, 2009 by admin

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make when remodeling a small bathroom is trying to cram in everything they’d like to put in a big bathroom. The second mistake is choosing fixtures, decorative items, and the like that are too bulky or too ornate. Choosing clean simple lines, without a lot of decoration, will make the space look larger.
One way to approach a small bathroom remodel, then, is to keep it simple. Sometimes less is more; and this is true of small bathrooms. If you are trying to create an elegant and luxurious bathroom don’t forget about understated elegance.

Starting with the big things, here are some tips to help you with your small bathroom remodel:
Choose only a compact shower stall or only a whirlpool or spa tub that is smaller and deeper (this will fit nicely in a corner). Even some of the tub designs now being advertised for seniors would work in a small bathroom.
Choose a pedestal sink or a wall mounted sink. This will leave more floor space and make the room feel bigger.
Choose the most compact toilet you can find. Choose a taller model over a shorter wider style.

Now for decorative items:

* Choose a mirror with no frame or a mirror with a small frame — this will make the room look bigger and the mirror will reflect light farther in the room.
* Cover an entire wall with a mirror — this will create the appearance of a much larger space.
* Use fewer wall-mounted towel rods or rings — choose a ring beside the sink to save space.
* Store extra linens nearby, but put out only a minimum at any one time.
* Place light fixtures where they will reflect light throughout the room.
* If you don’t have a window, consider installing a tube light to bring in sunlight.
* Find creative ways to add storage in walls.

Decorating ideas:

* Choose lighter and brighter colors.
* Use glass block windows or frosted windows instead of curtains — it will make the room look larger.
* Use wallpaper or paint design that draws the eye upward to make the room appear larger — either vertical stripes, vertical designs, or a border at the top of the wall.
* Use small shelves above and under sinks, toilets, etc. to provide storage and decoration.
* Keep color combinations minimalist — no more than two colors.
* Avoid clutter — don’t set decorative items around that are not necessary.
* Add luxuries in ways that do not use more of your space (massaging shower heads, spa tub, radiant floor heating, fogless mirrors, heated towel rods, fragrances, etc.)

In small spaces, simplicity is generally best if you want to create a feeling of spaciousness and elegance. Clean simple lines, lots of light, no clutter, and an eye to the necessary will help you create a very comfortable and luxurious small bathroom remodel.

Keep Your Bathroom Dry * 5 Great Remodeling Tips

November 17, 2009 by admin

Did you know that excess moisture is the leading cause of decay in bathrooms? And even worse, most bathroom moisture issues will go undetected for years until its too late and menacing mold develops or structural damage occurs. The following is a list of five steps you can implement in your new bathroom plans to ensure that moisture will not be a problem.

1] Tubs and showers should be located on interior walls -
The idea is to make certain that you are not running supply and drain lines in an exterior wall where they are subject to extreme temperature variations. These fluctuations can produce moisture in the wall around the areas where the plumbing is located and should be avoided in your bathroom plans if at all possible.

2] Proper ventilation is a must -
If you are planning your dream bath design with a whirlpool tub or a steam shower you must not forget that these luxury items can create enormous amounts of steam in the bathroom. You should look for a high capacity super quiet bath fan and don’t be afraid to spend more for a high quality unit. Make certain that the new fan is ducted through an exterior wall by the shortest path possible. Most of all run the fan. If you have luxury items such as a whirlpool or steam shower, turn the fan on while taking a bath or steam. Afterwards, close the door and leave the fan on for a minimum of 30 additional minutes.

3] Toilet sweat… don’t sweat it –
Condensation on toilet tanks is common during the summer months when the water temperature inside the tank can be 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the air temperature. Air conditioning is the best way to eliminate this problem. Alternatively, you could consider using a toilet insulation kit or installing an anti-sweat valve which operates by adding just enough warm water to the tank to keep the temperature differential to a minimum.

4] Looks vs. leaks –
If your bathroom plans include a large and costly master bath remodel it’s not likely that you will consider using anything other than tile for your shower. If your goals and means are more modest, then you might consider using a one piece shower unit. By design, these units are seamlessly constructed and when properly installed will provide the ultimate protection against leaking. Of course, tile applications look nicer, but each grout line is an opportunity for water to penetrate.

5] Design a dryer wall -
On exterior walls the location of the vapor barrier can play a big roll in determining how much moisture is trapped in the bathroom. This issue is relatively simple to address in a bathroom remodel. The determining factor in proper vapor barrier placement is climate, as moisture typically moves in the direction from warmer areas to colder areas. Your geographic location will determine proper vapor barrier placement. In Michigan we have a heating climate dictating that vapor barrier is placed on the interior of wood wall and ceiling framing while permeable exterior sheeting is used to allow for any vapor that does get into the wall to escape. In a cooling climate the opposite may be true. Check with a local building expert to design the best system for your location.

By applying these five tips when remodeling of your bathroom, you can help fight the effects of moisture and have a great looking and functioning bathroom for many years to come.

Keep Your Dog in Your Yard Without Unattractive Fencing

November 17, 2009 by admin

A fence extension can keep your dog safely in your yard without you having to increase the height of the fence or resort to chains or shock collars. Fence extensions are not unattractive and many are easily removed and transported to a new fence if the owner needs to move. This is a great solution to the problem of dogs climbing or jumping fences.

Many homeowners have the problem of keeping their dogs in their yards because the dog climbs the fence. Many of the solutions to this are unsightly or unwieldy. “Invisible fences” have their problems too, as some dogs ignore the shock and the invisible fence does not protect the dog from people or other animals like a conventional fence does. Building a new fence or a taller fence is not within many owners’ means and some areas prohibit fences above a certain height.

One answer is to install a fence extension that extends about a foot inward. This stops a dog from being able to get purchase on the top of the fence, with which it can launch itself off the top and out of the yard. Since dogs’ bodies aren’t set up to reach behind their ears, Rover will have to get used to staying in his own yard. In addition to preventing your dog from getting hit by a car, this also prevents the injuries that are caused by a 6 foot drop onto hard surfaces.

Currently, there are companies offering attractive, easily installed extensions for moderate pricing. These come in many styles, materials and attachment types. There are many that are designed to pop on and off the fence for when you are moving or showing the house and don’t want the buyers to be distracted by the unusual fence setup or want to keep the extension as part of the chattels.

You can also make your own extension with boards, chain link or plywood. Some people have found success by bending panels of welded wire to a 45 degree angle and wiring one part of the panel to the existing fence. Welded wire has the stiffness that keeps it upright. If one wants to use chain link or wood, brackets will have to be used to solidly extend the material from the fence. Depending on how handy you are, you can make an attractive “shelf” or curving extension that doesn’t detract from the look of your yard. Ask your local hardware store or fencing supplier for solutions if you are stuck on something.

With careful planning and construction, you can have a fence that keeps your dog in the yard without having to reconstruct your entire fencing set up or violate your neighborhood’s fencing height restrictions. Safe fencing solutions are the key to keeping a wandering dog in the yard and will prevent accidents and injuries that my otherwise occur.
