Ben Starr’s Impossible Pergola, Pt. 1

Ben Starr gives a little insight into his madness: building a pergola in his back yard out of arches made from reclaimed railroad ties. Each arch weighs 700 pounds and has to be lifted into place and secured to footings using fiberglass reinforced concrete. After almost a year of searching for methods to lift these monsters into place, I discovered an old-fashioned tool called a roustabout, basically a hand-operated crane for lifting heavy pipes, and I repurposed it to help with the pergola.
