Modern Patio Doors – Choosing the Right One for You

Choosing patio doors to enhance your property is a good choice for three main reasons.
1. Practical uses – A convenient access to, and view of, a garden from a lounge or dining room, for example.
2. Gaining light – The extra natural light your property will gain, especially older buildings with small windows, makes patio doors an ideal choice.
3. Increased property value – Buyers love patio doors with access to a garden.
Due to modern advances in window and door technology it is possible to buy patio doors that will match your overall building design. There are many features available such as Georgian and mock Tudor designs and a choice of hard-wood or PVC.
If wood is your choice of material make sure it is hard-wood and not soft-wood. Hard-wood resists the ravages of Mother Nature where as soft-wood will warp, expand and contract greatly with changes of humidity and temperature creating either drafts or sticking doors.
If you are the owner of an old period house and you are considering either installing a new patio door or replacing an existing door or window with one, you must ensure your property has no restrictions to such changes. You may, for example, have a grade II listed building in which case you will need to consult the powers that be before installing your patio doors.
Have a look round your local DIY store or builders merchant; they generally have a vast range on display that you can touch and feel. There are many specialist companies that have show rooms so that you can get an idea of what is available to suit your older property.

7 Facts on Choosing the Right Cupola
December 11, 2009 by admin
Cupolas are making a come back—not only for barns, but for homes, garages, commercial buildings, and gazebos. Although they are ornamental, cupolas are also very functional, by circulating air and providing an inexpensive light source. Found throughout America in a variety of types, shapes, and sizes, they provide graceful lines that add to a buildings character, and definitely impressive when gazed upon. They help us return to our roots, a simpler life, when gazed upon we are brought back to our forefathers, the rock of this great nation.
Here are 7 pointers to consider when choosing a cupola:
1. Cupolas are built to last, with a character of tradition. They can be a bold ornament, a sophisticated focal point, a look out, and provide roof ventilation. They often serve as a landmark on commercial buildings, a personal touch on a home or country property.
2. Cupolas can be very small and decorative on medium sized structures, or large enough to be a full room. They can be square, rectangular, octagonal or round. The roofs may be square, peaked or domed. Most are built with a copper roof finished in natural, which will patina over the years, patina, which has been chemically treated to produce a patina, or polished finish, where the copper has been lacquered to keep the bright shiny copper finish.
3. For every architectural style there is a cupola to match. You have the ability to hone the aesthetic appeal of your home/business, and accent your style on antique or modern structures in a distinguishing way and give your buildings a touch of what designers have dubbed “Americana”.
4. The size of a cupola is determined by the height, length, and width of the building it will be placed upon. Basic rule of thumb is for every foot of unbroken roof line, you need a inch of cupola base. Example: 24 foot roof line = 24 inch base. If the building is higher than one story, it is recommended a larger cupola. You do not want the cupola to look unbalanced, or out of place, this is why the sizing is so important. The most common mistake is choosing the size from the ground, without realizing that once placed on the roof, it becomes much smaller. Therefore, it is important that appropriate measurements be taken.
5. Cupolas need to be proportional. They should not be tacked on—rather, they should be integrated into the building. A well proportioned cupola off sets the stark designs of modern architecture.
6. Cupola bases are designed to accommodate different roof pitches of the structure it will be placed upon. Typically, a cupola will fit a 6 to 12 degree pitch without a problem. The goal is to choose one that fits the roof, one that enhances the look, without over powering it.
7. Cupolas should be built by quality craftsman. A reputable craftsman will know the appropriate wood, how to make varied designs, when to recommend glass or louvered, and so on. They should listen to the look and functionality you want. Providing them with a picture of the building you will be placing the cupola on can help in the decision process. Working with them you get a chance to create something unique and elegant.
The cupola has become a symbol of America from the most extravagant and majestic, to the simple varieties that grace the roof tops of barns. It is exciting to see the past sitting atop many of the finest buildings of the world, maybe on top of yours.

Tips For Choosing And Installing A Patio Or Deck Awning
December 9, 2009 by admin
Porch and deck awnings have become popular with homeowners for not only helping to reduce cooling costs in summer, but also for extending the usability of the area over which the device is installed. Summer heat can make enjoying a deck or patio unbearable in some areas of the country. A professionally installed awning can add value to the home and make those peak times of summer days more enjoyable. Installing a home awning can prove to be a terrific investment. Before you decide and install your porch, patio or deck awning, there are a few things you should know.
Fixed or Retractable?
Awnings generally come in two separate varieties: fixed or retractable. The main difference between retractable and fixed frame awnings is the capacity for movement. A fixed frame awning functions as a more permanent structure. It will provide continual weather protection and is always present for continual and uninterrupted shade and cover. A retractable awning offers movement due to spring-loaded arms that support the awning and provides the option of sun or shade. If full weather protection is desired, a fixed awning may be the way to go.
Businesses and retail locations often use fixed awnings for signage and for protection from the elements over entrances and exits. For the home, a retractable one is a perfect choice because it allows for the homeowner to extend and retract the awning as needed. It can be retracted either manually or automatically using a remote control or on/off switch. Retractable devices are very convenient and provide a considerable amount of control for the homeowner of how and when it is used.
Choosing Colors and Fabrics
Awning manufacturers now offer a wide variety of fabrics and colors that go in their products. It is best to choose a high quality grade of fabric. The difference in price between high and low quality fabrics does not justify investing in a cheaper fabric grade. As with most consumer items, the old adage “you get what you pay for” rings true here as well. Heavy fabrics will resist fading easier than light or cheaper grades. Fabrics manufacturer’s warranties should span at least five years, and with good maintenance and care, their lifespan should prove to be much longer. Metal frames should come with lifetime warranties. Be sure to choose a color for your awning that will suitably match the exterior of your home.
Homeowner’s Associations Rules and Bylaws
If you are homeowner or condominium owner that is part of an association, always check to make sure that installing an awning will not violate association rules or bylaws. Because awnings are energy savers and tend to reduce energy cooling costs, most homeowners’ associations are generally receptive to the idea of installing one, provided it is an attractive addition to the building. You may have to request permission in writing and provide exact details of fabric color, size and the manner in which it will be installed.
Installation Tips
When deciding on the company that will install your new awning, a little research and due diligence will go a long way in making the job easier. It is suggested that you look for a company that is an active member of the Professional Awning Manufacturers Association. Ask for references, and if possible, visit homes that have had awnings installed by the provider you are considering. Most reputable firms will keep a photographic portfolio of the work they have done in the past. Talk to the homeowners to get personal feedback about their experiences with the company you are interviewing. Lastly, if you plan on installing your retractable awning yourself, be sure to have a back up installation plan just in case your good efforts do not produce the results that you previously anticipated.

On warm summer nights patios can be the perfect retreat to enjoy a glass of wine or a BBQ but to create the right effect in your outdoor space, you need to invest in the right patio doors for your home. These doors can connect the outside space of your home to the inside so to create a smooth transition between the two spaces, check out our top tips below.
Choose the right design and style
With so many options available, you can be sure that the perfect doors for your home are out there. It would be wise to bear in mind that the door you choose should complement the style and design of your home to help bring the outdoors, indoors. Clear glass is a very popular choice and there are a range of different designs in this material. There are also a large variety of etched glass or stained glass doors available in different patterns which can add a touch of uniqueness to your choice. There are a large number of colours available so it’s really up to personal taste and how sympathetic to the building you want your doors to be.
Consider the type of door
There are two types of doors available and you can either choose gliding patio doors or hinged ones. Choosing the right doors for your patio is simple; just take a look at the room that you are fitting them into and make an assessment of how much space you have available. If space is at a premium then you may want to opt for the gliding option as with these you don’t need to clear out any space for them or rearrange bulky furniture. If you are fitting them into a large room then hinged doors can create a stylish look and feel.
Consider type of material
You should consider the climate and weather conditions when choosing the right material. Doors with insulated glass are a wise selection as this type of glass can help you to keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. There are different types of materials available for the frames including wood, vinyl and aluminium. The benefits of aluminium is that they are low maintenance and generally cheaper. Wooden and vinyl work particularly well for insulating your home, wood in particular is a very popular choice as they tend to come in very attractive designs and add a touch of elegance to any house.
Choose a quality company
If you want to get the most value for money, it’s always wise to do as much research into local retailers and manufacturers as possible. There are a variety of expert manufacturers and fitters in the market so it’s always a good idea to get quotes from at least three different companies. You can find quality companies through word of mouth referrals from friends and family, by browsing the internet or by visiting some local retailers.
Before you make a purchase, always check with manufacturers what features and styles they offer and buy the best quality you can afford so that you can have the best doors for your budget.

Kitchen Remodeling: Choosing Your New Kitchen Cabinets
December 2, 2009 by admin
Kitchen cabinets are important furnishings in your kitchen. They add a touch of elegance and class to your kitchen’s entire look depending, of course, on their design. If your kitchen looks dull, a little remodeling can add more life and style to your kitchen. It does not have to be an extravagant kitchen makeover. Changing your old kitchen cabinets to new ones can simply do the trick.
As previously mentioned, kitchen remodeling does not necessarily have to be grand and tedious. It’s a common misconception. Remodeling your kitchen does not necessarily mean that you have to totally change everything from lighting, to countertops, to kitchen cabinets, to kitchen appliances, to floor tiles. You can take it one step at a time. It can prove to be cheaper since you only change certain parts of your kitchen one at a time whenever your budget allows you to do so. So, whether you are thinking of totally remodeling your kitchen all at once or taking it one step at a time, kitchen cabinets can be a perfect first move.
Choosing a brand new set of kitchen cabinets should not be done on impulse. It may sound like an easy task but it definitely is not. Remember that kitchen cabinets are permanent fixtures that you cannot change at whim (unless you have the money) as other kitchen appliances like oven toaster or microwave ovens. Before you make your first move, visit your local home improvement stores and check out their collection of collection of kitchen cabinets. You will probably have a handful of designs to choose from. Viewing these cabinets and imagining them installed in your kitchen is a great way to decide which set of cabinet will look lovely in your kitchen.
Another option would be to go online and check out different kitchen cabinets available. Kitchen cabinets may be a little pricey but if you search hard enough online, you are sure to find one that suits your taste and budget. It is wise to check out online home improvement retailer or individuals who specialize in kitchen cabinets. If you want your kitchen cabinets to be exceptionally rare and can only be found at your home, there are a lot of companies or individuals who offer customized kitchen cabinets. Note though that they may cost more than what you previously expected but it is more important to get specifically what you want than have your kitchen cabinets remodeled year after year.
When choosing your kitchen cabinets, you do not only consider their design, you also have to consider their functionality. Keep in mind what you need those cabinets for. What will you put in them? Kitchen cabinets greatly determine what you can and what you cannot have in your kitchen. Choose a set that offers more space yet looks stylish and elegant. You do not want to be stuck with good-looking kitchen cabinets that have very limited space, don’t you?
Carefully examine also the size of the kitchen cabinets before you purchase them. Most local home improvement stores sell pre-cut kitchen cabinets and homeowners are defied by the size. You can always change the measurements but doing so can incur additional costs. Even the most expensive and elegant looking kitchen cabinet will be useless if they cannot be installed in your kitchen.
Keep the above mentioned tips in mind before you scout for your kitchen cabinets. Once you’ve found the cabinet set of your fancy, then it is just apt to let the kitchen remodeling begin. Have a kitchen remodeling professional to install it or do it yourself. Whichever you prefer, your kitchen cabinet can be set up in a day or two.

Choosing Counter Tops for Kitchen Remodeling

Choosing Counter Tops For Kitchen Remodeling
There are innumerable options that are available in the market for kitchen countertops. Depending upon the budget and the tastes and the preferences, you can get a real makeover for the kitchen. The costs are dependent upon the kind of material used for counter tops, the sizes, polishing of the surfaces, installation time taken, the cornices and the moldings.
Granite
Granite is the ultimate for sheer luxury. Granite is available in many colors and not just black and red. There are many shades and textures available. It can absorb a lot of heat, wear and tear. Its not seamless, therefore pieces need to be joined together. The maintenance of granite is simple as it can be washed with detergent and water.
Engineered Stone
The various kinds if engineered stones available in the market are DuPont Zodiaq®, Cambria Quartz, Portifino and Silestone. This is also as expensive as granite. This stone is easy maintenance and doesn’t crack easily as it’s less porous as granite and is resistant to acid. It also doesn’t require any sealing as granite.
Ceramic tiles
Ceramic tiles come in different shapes, sizes, materials, thickness, durability, colors and patterns. You can opt for a rough or a smooth finish. Depending upon the finishes, ceramic tiles can be very cheap or near about as expensive as granite and other special stones. Grouting between the tiles is expensive and they can chip and crack over a period of time. Remember to put only heat resistant ceramic tiles for the counter tops.
Stainless steel counters
Stainless Steel counters look great and make a kitchen look futuristic. These counter tops are durable, scratch resistant, heat resistant, and cool to touch and won’t stain. You can even incorporate the draining boards as well as the kitchen sinks in stainless steel to match the counters. But they can be hard to clean as finger print marks, dust and dirt will easily show. Non directional stainless steel finishes are also available which will lessen the effect of finger print marks, scratches and dust. These counters are very expensive.
Wood
Various types of woods have been used for cabinets and now you can use them for counter tops too. Remember to combine with other materials especially near the sink and drain board area. Wood needs to be polished regularly. It also shows up scratches and knife marks easily.
Lavastone
it’s the latest and is made of glazed volcanic rock. It’s heat resistant (but of course), stain and scratch resistant. It’s a very tough stone and is the latest for countertops. It’s more expensive than granite.
Glass
Glass surfaces are also been used. The glass has been toughened and made heat resistant. But it can’t be used as a chopping board. The edges can also be smoothened out. Very expensive but looks great. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance and cleaning of the surfaces.
Semi precious surfacing
Semi precious stones are used along with its binder to set the counter top to give a smooth finish. Looks great and is very expensive. Only install if you don’t have kids in the house. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer for cleaning and maintaining the surfaces.
